Into the Mind
Eight words
Once I
Ate words;
Now I
Hate words.
The title fits the poem both homonymically and descriptively.
Overeating leads to disgust; and any quantity of words may be more
than enough to trigger this phenomenon. Although it may not have
been in Gluckman’s mind at the time of composition, taking back
what one has said may in this context be considered a form of auto-
cannibalism, from the ego’s point of view: words are an actualization
of the self, extending into the public sphere.
