stubborn pragmatism and skeptical materialism.
Finally, the poem rests on the image of the mind as a literal field
of thought. Like arable land, the malleable brain is furrowed;
through history, each has worked upon the other, shaping the
contours of agriculture and imagination. This defines a two-way,
therefore more complex, relationship of man and his labor, a
dialectic process not properly seen from a bull’s-eye view.
