Into the World
Before lid’s lifted very far,
The smarter cookies in the jar,
At risk of breaking off a crumb,
Will dive beneath the sweet and dumb.
The type of non-participant analogized here is quite different
from his counterpart in the previous piece. This individual sees
trouble coming and avoids it at any cost; of course, even cookies at
the bottom of the jar will eventually be taken and consumed, but
self-preservation is not a justification based on rational assessments
of immortality. The innocents are led to slaughter, ignorant and
contented, while the smart cookie makes an all-out effort not to be
caught in the round-up.
