Into the World

              A monster
              Without make-up,
              America
              Claws at its
              Mirror images.

Americans like to think the face their country presents to the
world bears an expression of honesty: we do not have ulterior
motives in our foreign policy; we just want everyone else to be like
us, to enjoy our freedoms and prosperity. One result of this
collective self-deception is that foreigners desiring those goals have
to struggle against dictators supported in large measure by American
overt and covert aid. When those repressive rulers lose control, our
troops move in. Evil undisguised would indeed unknowingly attack
its own reflection, recognizing the threat. Ironically, we think
ourselves good, yet make war against people striving for the same
values. Perhaps if we admitted our own tyranny, we would vent our
wrath on tyrants instead of their victims.
