The Big Idea – Act 1

RIVAL 1: Right now he is too popular. First we must listen to his
crazy scheme. If nobody else in there tries to discredit the plan, then
we’ll try to do it. If that fails, and they really want to follow his lead,
then we’ll have to come up with another way of thwarting him.

RIVAL 2: Yeah, well, I still don’t like it, boss. Why didn’t we bring a
few of the boys along to back us up in case of a fight?

RIVAL 1: You nitwit! That would have been too obvious! Anyway,
he only invited those who could understand what he was saying.

RIVAL 2: Then what are they doing here? (indicates HALFWITS)
They can’t even remember if their thumbs are on their hands or their
       feet.

RIVAL 1: Maybe they’re lost. Who cares? Let’s get in there, and see
       who else has come.

(RIVALS exit into cave; HALFWITS go to front of stage; as they
       speak, ENTREPRENEUR, DEFEATIST, and INTELLECTUAL
cross at intervals behind them from stage left into cave)

HALFWIT 1: Now I’m sure we’ve been insulted!

HALFWIT 2: That is indeed what resulted.

HALFWIT 3: Why are we never consulted?

HALFWIT 1: But now at least my thinking’s clear.

HALFWIT 2: You mean about what brought us here.

HALFWIT 3: Why does it feel it took a year?

HALFWIT 1: To meet, to discuss, to decide.

HALFWIT 2: First, of course, we must go inside.

HALFWIT 3: Why can’t we do without a guide?

HALFWIT 1: Or was it decide, discuss, meet?

       HALFWIT 2: My recollection’s incomplete.
