The Big Idea – Act 3
WOMAN 1: What are you two doing here? Did our dear old chief
send you on a mission to sabotage our plans?
RIVAL 1: Why, no, not at all. Whatever gave you that idea?
WOMAN 3: Well, everyone knows you’re his right-hand man. And
you talked against The Big Idea at the meeting.
WOMAN 2: That’s right; I remember, now: it was him and that
hairy baboon, and they both snuck out of there ahead of us.
RIVAL 2: What do you mean—
RIVAL 1: (restrains RIVAL 2) Now, now, ladies, let’s be reasonable.
I’m here on my own behalf. I’d really hate to see you make the wrong
decision: you’re such nice young women; it would be a shame to see
you broken in body and spirit just because you followed some glib
rabble-rouser into what looked like a wonderful opportunity.
WOMAN 4: We’ve been through all that already. You’re just a
spoilsport.
RIVAL 1: No, no, I sincerely wish to help you. I think you ought to
consider some things that weren’t brought up at the meeting.
WOMAN 1: Such as?
RIVAL 1:
If you’ll excuse me speaking as a male,
I would like to tell you why I’m so sure
The Big Idea is going to fail
To provide any woman with a cure
For the complaints that I have heard you voice
About the brutality in our group,
And the grinding lack of freedom of choice
That forces you into an endless loop
Of servitude first to husband then child,
No time or space left for what you desire;
I understand completely why you are riled,
And why this new plan is one you admire.
