addressed his remarks to no one in particular until they rounded a
corner and came to the lane leading to Saint Katerina’s. “Why are all
those people standing around the churchyard? Don’t they have any
work to do? Where are their landlords?”
“Only the bravest have remained, Your Honor. And I am not one
of them. I will go no further.”
