The Old Observatory
I had stayed up late one midsummer night,
Out in the yard where I hoped to catch sight
Of the Perseid meteor shower,
Visible that year for only an hour:
After the second-quarter moon had set,
The heavens would be dark enough to get
A glimpse of white-hot space rocks streaking by,
Until the sun came up and bleached the sky.
