Operation Belshazzar

soon and decisively, as is the deity’s habit when dealing with repeat
        offenders.”
“I see. So the South shall rise from the ashes of Appomattox, the
true believers in Dixie forming a new Confederacy and battling the
        damned Yankees?”
Lee frowned. Had I been too flippant? But no: the furrowed brow
was but the outward manifestation of deep thought.
“More or less, but the divisions in the country do not follow the
same geographical lines; things have changed, but the situation is
polarizing to the point where the warning is clear. ‘Mene mene tekel
upharsin’ were the words emblazoned in fire by the moving finger.
‘Mene’ twice: two weigh-ins for the kingdom of the wicked, two
warnings, each followed by hellfire and brimstone. This country has
devolved to such an abominable condition that it won’t be long
before the armies of the Lord are on the move. And this time they
will not be stopped. In practical terms, a majority of the population in
a majority of the states is ready to rebel against the corrupt and
blasphemous federal government, and the media and the military are
on their side. Those not willing to accept the Lord will be put to the
sword, and we shall at last live in a Christian dominion. Amen.”
“Amen!” I echoed, hoping the cook would not hear. I wished I
hadn’t heard. But it was time to close the deal. “Your words have
moved me profoundly, Cyrus Lee. The Mesopotamian Revelation
Society will accept my report that your work deserves a wider
audience—your light should not be hidden under a bushel. You have
found the truth embedded in Holy Scripture, truly good news for the
        faithful.”
And I quoted the very large figure to be deposited in a bank
        account in his name.
“Indeed.” Lee beamed complacently. “They have been waiting for
a sign, and now it shall become reality.”
“Yes, and you shall be the bearer of that sign. Your wisdom will
be spread across the land. This grant will enable you to print and
distribute hundreds of thousands of copies, worldwide and in many
        languages, if you so desire.”
“Oh, I do. But I can do more than just publish: I have a plan—not
to be made public, but worked out in detail in notebooks back in the
