2015: The Whirling Vortex of Time
Pop-out cut from two 8.5x11” sheets of card stock, glued at a central
point and folded flat for mailing; minor assembly required.
As mailed (flat). Trompe-l’oeil: years prior to 1986 are on a flat circle,
glued against the slotted square in back. 1986 through 2014 are on
the front square, stretched to a spiral by the four tabs at the corners
of the front square when inserted into the corresponding slots in the
back square. The illusion of infinite depth, like the stage of toy
theatres, works best when the object is viewed on a line
perpendicular to its center. The intention is to represent both the
continuum of passing years and their recession in memory; vertigo, as
suggested by the title, is a by-product of trying to follow time
backward as it apparently spins forward through the present.
