blew and all the bells began to ring. In a minute, men from below and
above came running to the deck where we were, and began to lower
boats from the davits halfway down the side of the ship. The shock
was terrible. I held Fannie and thought: Oh, here we both have to go
down in the ocean. Then someone calmed us, telling us that it was
only emergency practice for the crew!
