        that. When older, I walked with my father through those woods from
        the city at midnight or three in the morning, but my mother always
        worried.  So  he  would  remain  in  the  city  all  week,  come  home  for
        Sabbath, and leave again Sunday morning. All I could boast of was
        that I had finished a whole volume in so many weeks. My mother
        was very proud of my great feats, and my father already considered
        me as a man. Of the sciences I knew nothing but a little addition,
        subtraction, and multiplication, just enough to run a little grocery or
        cigarette  shop  when  I  should  be  blessed  with  a  wife  and  children.
        Two  years  I  led  this  independent  life,  until  my  cousin  David
        Binshtock and I decided to go to another city for more knowledge.
