“Oh, I’m not worried, Vince. If I have to, I’ll sell my own cassettes
at swap meets. Making money is not my message, and spreading my
message may not make money—that’s up to you and the rulers of the
record industry. I’m the artist, remember? Now, I’ll be in Hollywood
the day after tomorrow, ready to record. If we don’t have a contract,
I’ll rent a sixteen-track store-front studio and make Running Sore all by
myself. My share of the profits from these concerts will be more than
enough to cover expenses. So, there it is, man. Now I gotta get out of
here. I’m beat.”

Dismissed, Lazaretto packed up his papers and took his leave. Just
a few minor changes, he said to himself as he walked away, shaking
his head sadly; I’m not asking for much.
