CEO: I have been in touch with my counterparts in other Omega
companies. We are all in shock.
EDO: Then it’s true? Capitalism is dead?
OL: Not exactly. Opportunity for individual initiative will exist. Will
always exist: it’s human nature to want to get ahead.
CFO: How did it happen? Why didn’t someone on Omega’s board
see what would happen and blow the whistle? Was it a conspiracy?
OL: What does that mean in the corporate world? Nothing. Anyway,
I can’t tell you anything about the board of directors. I’ve never seen
them, never talked to them. All interaction is electronic. I will tell you
that they have been the sharpest operators I’ve ever worked with. No
stone unturned, no advantage given away, not a trick missed in
getting what they want.
EDO: And now they have what they want? It’s craziness!
CCLO: But it’s done. And the craziness may be ours. Listen: while
the rest of you—and every other former executive and shareholder of
the world’s multinational corporations—sat around gloating about
the acquisition coups and Omega’s buyback of all its equity—trillions
of dollars—I’ve been diligently researching, mostly on my own. I
wanted to know the identity of the masterminds behind Omega, how
they came from nowhere to owning ninety-five percent of the wealth
of this planet. Presuming my efforts would not be appreciated, I’ve
kept the results to myself. But what just happened surprised even me.
