Of all time’s treatments of the head—
Hair bleached and thinning to a thread—
The first and worst a lifetime gave
Was birthing’s permanent shock wave.
I cannot know what makes you tick;
I’m left to hope that what I hear
Is heartbeat’s metronomic click,
And not the clockwork bomb I fear.
Women in
Trucks with plugs
In their ears
Running me
Down is one
Of my fears.
