Breaking the Grapefruit Connection

“Zero!” said Captain Kaga, popping up. Pamplemousse
involuntarily looked up, saw what Kaga held before him, and
       disappeared.
“You can come out now. But be careful,” he added, as his friend
threw open the closet door. “That thing is very young, but it already
       has some pretty big teeth.”
“Ye gods!” gasped Lugo. “Where’s Pamplemousse? Did that
       creature eat him?”
“No. Somewhere out in spacetime, the age of dinosaurs is
flourishing. Just as Pamplemousse was about to switch some
criminals for grapefruit, I startled him into looking at these.” He held
up the mirror and the stegosaurus picture. “I don’t think he’ll find
many metronomes in that world. In fact, he’ll probably be quite busy
explaining to this infant’s cohorts where their playmate has suddenly
gone. Anyway, why don’t you try shooing it into that closet while I
       call the zoo?”
