For really bad peeps there were some pretty gruesome punishments around that were guaranteed to stop them being bad ever again – mainly due to them being a bit on the dead side.
Quick! Catch that dangerous criminal, police monkey!
It has been claimed that some criminals were fed to crocodiles, though this should probably be taken with a pinch of salt (the claim, not the criminals – crocs don’t like salt).
But the worst punishment was being impaled on a big wooden stake. Eeeuw! It’s enough to put you off kebabs for life.
How about the dog takes a turn for a change?
Someone had to keep an eye out for ancient naughtiness, so there were policemen armed with staffs guarding public places. They also had dogs, and it’s even thought they may even have used trained monkeys to help them catch bad guys.
It’s unlikely you’ll ever see that kind of thing happen nowadays, but if you ever spot a police car being driven by a very small, hairy policeman eating a banana, you’ll know the cops are trying out some ancient Egyptian ideas.
