Of course, it wasn’t all about sitting around waiting or throwing body parts and poo around the place. The attackers also did what their name suggests – attack!
Kids were sent to the safest places of the castle along with the women when an attack took place, but it must have been properly, pant-wettingly terrifying.
Attackers would use massive ladders or wooden ‘siege towers’ packed with men to
try to get over the castle walls, although defenders would shoot at them with arrows, push the ladders off with long poles or throw rocks down on them, so it was no walk in the park. If it sounds like it was, you’re walking in the wrong kind of park.
Ooooo, what´s that funny little hole? I´m going for a loo- AAARRRGGGHHH!
It´s a murder hole.
If enemy soldiers managed to break down the massive, thick doors of the castle’s gatehouse, they would face some pretty nasty defences. The ceiling above the gatehouse contained spaces called murder holes, which is a bit of
a giveaway on the ‘don’t go near them’ front. Defenders could fire arrows through them or pour boiling water or burning hot sand down on the knights below.
