If you lived in a medieval castle, you’d have been no stranger to jousting – or to the guys who did it. We’re talking KnIgHtS!
Your dad might have been a knight, and you could have even worked for one if you were a boy over the age of seven.
First up, what exactly was a knight?
Knights were in charge of the soldiers in a castle. Their job was to make sure the castle and the Lord’s and Lady’s family were protected from enemy armies. They could also be expected to go off and fight in wars for the king or on behalf of the church.
Most churches nowadays just expect you to help with bake sales or be nice to your neighbour, which is far less messy and painful than going to war.
Knights were very important members of the castle and usually came from wealthy or noble backgrounds. If successful, they could become famous and mega-rich. They’d earn titles and land and could even end up building a castle of their own.
I´m so famous I should have my own TV show!

But if you were a poor kid, you could more or less forget any dreams of becoming a knight. Armour and weapons were very expensive, so if you were the child of a servant or peasant the only way you could afford to become a knight was if you were spotted at the castle being amazing at fighting or using weapons and the Lord helped pay for your training.
