For those boys (and it was just boys, which as usual seems extremely unfair on girls who fancied some armoured adventure) who did get to become knights, their role could begin as early as the age of seven!
A boy would leave home that age to become a page in a lord’s castle. There, he received an education and learned good manners and, of course, how to fight against the other pages.
Squires even went into battle alongside their knights sometimes. So if your dad ever asks if you’d like to go to work with him one day, just check to see if he’s wearing a metal suit and carrying a sword before you say yes.
When he was 14, he’d become a squire to an actual knight. He had lots of jobs to do, like cleaning his master’s armour and helping him get ready for battle. He’d train with weapons like swords, shields and lances, and learn to ride huge war horses.
