“Father. I’m Colin. I really am.”
“In the garden. In the garden . . .”
said Mr Craven, over and over, as if the words were magic.
Mary was also chanting magic under her breath, “Be happy. Be happy.
Be happy!” Then she burst out, “Yes! It was
the garden that did it! And Dickon and Mrs
Sowerby and Jump the pony and Mr Robin and the squirrels . . .”
“And most of all Mary, of course,” cried
Colin, “because she believed in me. She
believed I’d grow as strong and wick as her!
‘Wick’ is the best word, father! Do you know it? It
means ‘alive’! Oh, and by the way, Father, I’m going to live
for ever and ever and ever!”
