Mrs Medlock saw Ben Weatherstaff pass the kitchen window and called him inside for a glass of her elderflower cordial. She was aching for news. “Did they meet up?” she hissed “Did you see them together?”
“Eh, this cordial’s sweet as a summer garden,” said Ben, and drank slowly while Mrs Medlock battered him with questions.
“Did they speak? Are things any better between them?”
Ben wiped his mouth to hide a smile. “Different. Them’s different.
Take a look, if tha care to. See what’s comin’ across the grass.”
Mrs Medlock, Martha, the nurse – and every other servant in the house –
rushed to the kitchen window and gasped.
