17th May Shavuot
Shavuot is a Jewish festival during which Jewish people remember the day that God gave the Prophet Moses the holy scriptures, the Torah. All Jewish people go to the synagogue on the first day of Shavuot to hear the reading of the Ten Commandments. This is a list of laws for living a good life. They can be found in the Torah, the Qur’an and in the Bible, too.
23rd May Pentecost or Whitsun
Pentecost or Whitsun is the 8th Sunday after Easter. On this day, Christians remember that God
sent the Holy Spirit to be with the followers of Jesus. In Britain the festival borrowed some of the ideas from the May festival of Beltane, making it yet another celebration of summer arriving. In the north- west of England some churches and chapels still hold ‘Whit walks’
– parades that include brass bands, choirs and girls dressed in white.
