Today is the day that Hindus start celebrating the birthday of Lord Ganesh, the god with the head of an elephant. Communities get together to worship, have parties and decorate their houses with models and pictures of Lord Ganesh. He is known as the god of new beginnings and is supposed to bring prosperity, good fortune
and success.
At the beginning of the celebrations, models of Ganesh are put up on high platforms in the home, or they are placed in beautifully decorated outdoor tents. These models are covered with yellow and red flowers and red paste made from sandalwood. They are also given presents of special homemade sweets.
