Mother’s Day is a very old festival. People celebrated it in ancient Greece when the mother goddess, Rhea, was worshipped. Later, Christians celebrated the day as a time for people to go back to their ‘mother’ church if they had moved away from their home town. Nowadays, we spend the day saying thank you to our mothers or carers or special female relatives or friends with a card, gift or meal.
Make a Mother’s Day Promise Jar You will need:
Scraps of paper – white or coloured Scissors or pinking shears
Pen or pencil
Clean old jam jar – decorated with stickers or glitter glue pens if you like Colourful recycled wrapping paper
or pages from a magazine Elastic band
Length of thin ribbon
Why not make a lovely breakfast and lay the table – maybe
with a vase of flowers, too? Then leave the jar
of promises out as a surprise as well!
1 Cut your scraps of paper into squares that are about 6 cm x 6 cm, using the scissors or pinking shears.
2 Write a promise on each piece of paper. Ten is probably enough. Some ideas are: “I will make you a cup of tea.” “I will walk the dog.”
3 Fold each piece of paper in half and put them in the jar.
4 Put the lid, top down, on the sheet of wrapping paper
or a page from a magazine and draw a larger circle around it. You can do this by hand – don’t worry if it’s not a perfect circle.
5 Cut out the large circle with the scissors or pinking shears.
6 Screw the lid on to the jar and place the large paper circle on top.
7 Fix it in place with the elastic band and tie some ribbon over the band.
