EDGAR ALLAN POE (1809–1849)
Summertime is here at last! It’s time for strawberries and cream and barbecues. The roses are out in the gardens and parks and, of course, there are lots of long, hot, sunny days to look forward to – right?
Well . . . there will be some sunshine, but often we get excited and plan summer outdoor activities in Britain, only to find that the rain means we have to change our plans.
Nevertheless, this is the month
to enjoy long days outside. When
you get home from school it feels
as though you have so much
extra time to have fun! You can
meet your friends in the park
for football or just laze around
chatting in the shade eating ice
cream. June has the longest day
of the year, so by 21st June you won’t see the sun go down until around 10 p.m. The full moon occurs on 14th June, so you’ll have to stay up late if you want to see it!
According to traditional folklore, if you pick a rose at midsummer, it will keep fresh until Christmas!
