4th June Shavuot
Shavuot is a Jewish festival during which Jewish people remember the day that God gave the Prophet Moses the holy scriptures, the Torah. Jewish people believe that Moses received the Torah from God on a mountain called Mount Sinai in Israel.
Shavuot always comes 50 days after the second day of Pesach. Women and girls light candles to welcome in the holiday, and some Jewish people stay up all night learning the Torah.
All Jewish people go to the synagogue on the first day of Shavuot to hear the reading of the Ten Commandments. This is a list of laws for living a good life. They can be found in the Torah, the Qu’ran and in the Bible, too.
Challah is a special bread that Jewish people eat on Shabbat (the Sabbath) and at big Jewish festivals such as Shavuot. It is a beautiful, plaited, slightly sweet bread and is absolutely delicious! At Shavuot the challah represents the new year’s wheat which people give thanks for.
