 5th June World Environment Day
World Environment Day was set up in 1974 to encourage all of us, including governments and businesses, to look after our planet. Countries take it in turns to host and choose a theme for World Environment Day. For example, when Colombia was the host country, the theme was ‘Time for Nature’. The focus was on ‘biodiversity’
which means the number and variety of all the living things on Earth. Colombia has a very high biodiversity, but because the Amazon rainforest is becoming smaller, the country wanted to raise awareness of the need to protect all life by stopping humans from chopping down the trees in the forest and damaging the natural habitat of everything that lives there.
Plant wildflowers such as bluebells and foxgloves in your garden to encourage the bees to come!
