       15th July
10th July Sea Sunday
Sea Sunday is usually held on the second Sunday in July. It is a Christian festival, mainly celebrated by people who live by the sea. On this day, people go to church to say prayers and give thanks for their friends and family members who go out in all weathers to work at sea. Charities and organisations such as the Sailors’ Society and the Sea Cadets hold parades and fundraising events.
St Swithun’s Day
On St Swithun’s Day there is a saying:
,
.
, .
Thankfully, this is rarely true! St Swithun was
the Bishop of Winchester. When he died in 862 CE,
he was buried in front of the west door of the old
Saxon cathedral building because he had said he
wanted to be buried outdoors. He lay there for over
100 years. When another bishop came along in 971 CE, he wanted to have a new patron saint, so he dug up poor old St Swithun on his feast day, 15th July, and moved him to a tomb inside! That day there was a terrible storm which lasted for 40 days and 40 nights. Many people believed that this happened because the saint was not happy about being moved indoors, so that is where the saying about the weather comes from.
