Inspect an Insect
Insects and minibeasts are amazing. Sometimes we call them ‘bugs’ or ‘pests’, but did you know that many of them are very useful in the garden? Bees carry pollen from flower to flower, which helps plants make new seeds. Ladybirds eat the aphids that eat plants. Which garden creatures can you find? Just remember – look but don’t touch!
butterfly
leatherjacket
ground beetle
Go out into your garden, local park or nature area. Look for insects by moving slowly and quietly. You will usually find them on or under plants. Sometimes they might even be right down in the grass.
Use your magnifying glass to have a good, close look. Can you guess which kind of creature you are looking at? If you’re not sure, draw a picture of your interesting insect and then look it up when you get home.
spider
snail
aphids (also called greenflies)
lacewing
