Ask a grown-up to heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat, then gently fry the bacon, onions and carrots for around 10 minutes until the vegetables are soft, stirring occasionally.
Add the garlic and fry for another minute. Make sure you keep stirring once you have added the garlic, so it doesn’t burn.
Pour in the stock, tinned tomatoes, herbs and salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, then turn down the heat, stir well and cover. Simmer for 10 minutes.
Add the lentils and cook for another 15 minutes or until the lentils are completely soft. Then turn off the heat, tip in the peas and stir.
Allow the soup to cool slightly. Ask your grown-up to ladle the soup into a blender, or to use a stick blender to blend the soup in the pan. Blend until the soup is thick, but not too lumpy. Warm the soup through again, stir well and serve.
