 Clever Compost
Making compost is another way to have messy fun outside – and it’s great for your garden, too.
First, you’ll need to find a good compost bin. You could use a crate with holes in, or ask a grown-up to nail together old fencing or wooden crates to make one.
Fill your compost bin with a layer of green things, such as grass cuttings and fruit and vegetable scraps. Water it well.
Now add a layer of brown things, such as dried leaves, pine needles or even old newspapers, and water it again. Add some soil and – you guessed it, more water.
Keep your compost bin covered, to keep the moisture and good bacteria inside. Every few weeks, use a spade to mix the compost together.
When it looks dark and crumbly, it’s ready to help make your soil a happy place for plants to grow!
You will need:
wooden crates/old fencing brown leaves
kitchen scraps
straw
grass clippings brown leaves green leaves wood chips
a watering can soil
a spade
