 Diwali Rangoli nature design
During Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, many people make colourful rangoli patterns on the floor to welcome their guests, using materials from nature. Usually rice flour or paste is used to make the pretty white outlines in a design, but chalk is a bit easier for smaller hands to manage!
Draw the outline of your pattern on your front step or walkway, using chalk – but ask permission first! You could also use a pencil to poke tiny holes in the bottom of a small paper cup, fill
the cup half full of white flour, and then tap it to sprinkle the flour on to the ground to make your design.
Fill in the white outlines with whatever you like. You can use brightly coloured flower petals, leaves or coloured sand, or even uncooked rice, dried beans and lentils, spices or grass.
If you are using sand, rice or spices, use your paper cup to sprinkle them on to the ground. Then try using a fork or spoon to make fine lines or patterns in the sand.
Finally, add some LED or battery operated tea lights to make your design really shine!
You will need:
coloured chalk white flour
flower petals or whole small flowers
flowers or leaves (dried or fresh)
dry, uncooked rice
colourful dried beans and lentils
non-flammable spices, such as turmeric or nutmeg
coloured sand small paper cups
a fork, spoon or whisk
tea lights (LED or battery operated)
