Children could also be used as hostages to the Romans – but not in the way you might think. It usually seems to have involved the children of nobles rather than common people. The Romans would teach the children the way of Roman life to prepare them to lead their people under Roman rule when they got older.
If you want to try this, why not knock on the door of
Buckingham Palace and ask the Queen if she’d mind giving
you a few lessons on how to be all RoYaL and pOsH? She’s BoUnD to say yes!
Another way kids would be separated from their families in order to be taught things was through the custom of ‘fosterage’. This meant children would be sent to live with other families, where they would learn skills such as those of a warrior.
So, if you see your parents giving you FuNnY LoOkS and buying wooden swords online, get ready to move to a new house soon.
You might not feel like getting up on a cold, wet morning to go to school and you might grumble when you get difficult homework, but at least you don’t get given away to some posh Roman peeps or have to learn how to sKiN A MaMmOtH when you get home.
