As the Romans battled further north and west, they encountered stiff resistance from the locals in places like Wales and Scotland, but eventually much of the southern half and the east of Britain became very Romanised.
British people who had once lived as Celts changed pretty quickly to the Roman way of life. Towns were redesigned to a Roman- style grid-system of streets and grand public buildings were built. What had been Iron Age tribal settlements now had forums (market squares), basilicas (assembly rooms), temples, theatres, bathhouses, amphitheatres and even hotels and shopping malls! Just the place to buy the latest Roman fashions from Togas-R-Us.
