In one statuette that’s still around today, a Spartan girl is seen running in such a race. Her skirt was much shorter than would have been allowed in other Greek cities, which shows another difference in how girls were viewed.
Although girls did not fight in wars, the Spartans wanted them to grow up to be strong and fit so they could give birth to healthy sons who would go on to become ToUgH WArRiOrS.
Wealthy men had to pay for their own weapons and armour, and some even had horses, while poorer men served as hoplites armed with shields and spears, and the poorest were oarsmen in warships. These warships, called triremes, were powered by 170 oarsmen on three levels, one above the other. At the front was a ram covered in metal to smash into enemy ships and sink them. How much do you want one of THOSE at your local boating pond?
In Greek pictures warriors were sometimes depicted with no clothes on. Nakedness was a symbol of bravery in Greek art. It is not a symbol of bravery nowadays. We repeat, it is NOT a symbol of bravery nowadays.
