Rich ancient Greeks sometimes buried their dead with their favourite possessions and food for the afterlife.
They wanted to make sure their dead relatives had everything they needed so they could enjoy a happy neW life in the underWorld – a bit like going on a school trip, except you wouldn’t come home with a novelty pencil sharpener or souvenir baseball cap. The things
they buried usually included useful everyday objects such as bowls, combs, trinkets and food.
Richer Greeks were buried with beautiful jewellery, furniture and other valuable objects.
I´m going to bury this bread because Grandad loved a midnight snack.
I´ve brought Grandad´s favourite comb.
I thought your Grandad was bald?
Once the dead person reached their destination they had to pay Charon, who was the ferryman who carried the dead across the River StyX into the underWorld. The trip cost one abol (and no, you couldn’t buy a return ticket) so the person’s family sometimes left a coin on their body to pay for the journey.
