There were lots of other familiar games and toys that ancient Greek kids enjoyed. Hoops, spinning tops, yo-yos, rocking horses, sWings, see-saWs, dolls and dolls’ houses were popular. pLaYsTaTiOnS, LaPtOpS and 3D mOvIeS hadn’t really caught on yet.
Many Greek girls enjoyed playing knucklebones, which were very like modern jacks. They were made from the ankle joints of goats and the like. If you’re ever passing a farm and see a goat giving you a worried look, perhaps he just thinks you’re an ancient Greek after his knucklebones!
Watch your knuckles!
Children also played a more energetic version of “Heads or Tails” – which actually sounds like a lot of fun. Kids would divide into two teams then toss up a piece of broken pottery called a "potsherd". Depending on which side up it landed, one team would chase the other and try to capture its members.
Why don’t you give it a go? Just don’t use your grandma’s favourite china vase for the potsherd. Or if you do, don’t tell anyone we gave you the idea . . .
