Tom ran after Digby down another street, past a man carrying a pot of wine on his head, and found himself at a dead end,
standing in front of a grand house.
Tom snuck into the courtyard and there was Digby! He raced after him . . .
Most rich houses had a garden or courtyard in the centre with an altar to the gods and , where the family said their prayers. The walls were to make them smooth and painted white to reflect the sun, so the rooms didn’t get too hot.
