Inside, families had a small amount of wooden furniture. They stored their belongings in chests and there were no cupboards or wardrobes. There were not even beds – instead, people slept on couches and poorer people slept on the floor. Electricity had not been invented, but houses could be lit using oil lamps.
There were no toilets in ancient Greek houses. Instead, people had to use a pot. There were no showers either. Rich families had clay baths, but most families washed in a basin, and some cleaned themselves by rubbing olive oil on their body and scraping it off, along with any dirt, with a tool called a strigil.
