Feeling horrified and betrayed by both sides, and unsure who he can still trust,Adam returns to the first home he knew – the basement of Galbraith’s home, now in ruins. Linden finds him there and – finally – recognises Adam’s humanity.They talk and return to the summit together, where Adam summons both sides and reveals that he holds both the smallpox vial and the key to detonate the Midnight device – weapons to destroy each side.
Together with the Cailleach he announces a third way: the forest they are in will become one settlement for humans and robots to share together, in peace. Slowly, a small number of humans – including Linden, Della and Runa – and robots join Adam and the Cailleach.
The story ends with the new group working to build a new society together, and Red Sky arriving to deliver the medicine that will save Runa’s life.
