Adam and Runa leave Linden and Della behind with the Cailleach to recover from their injuries and return to
the human camp.There,Adam continues to fix and cre- ate new technologies to help the humans in their fight against the hostile robots – although many of the humans remain suspicious and hostile towards him.The lead-
er of the camp, Callum, shows Adam a secret machine, Midnight – an electro-magnetic bomb which, if it can be made to work, could wipe out every remaining hostile robot in a single blow, ending the war for good. Callum sets Adam the task of fixing the Midnight machine.
Linden returns to the human camp and is surprised to see how much Adam is trusted and has been accepted into society by the other survivors, but Runa explains how successful Adam has been in creating new machines and tactics to defeat their enemies.
Adam and Linden go out on a patrol together when sud- denly they are caught by Red Sky and taken to the old castle which has become the headquarters for the hos- tile robots.There they are separated, and Adam is taken to the leader of the robots – who introduces himself
as Adam-6. He is a later model of the same experiment which created Adam-2 – but he is a less sophisticated version. He tells Adam-2 the history of the robot-human war: how Galbraith created an advanced intelligence that was perfect – too perfect – and then spent subsequent efforts refining his invention so that every later model became less intelligent and less able to think for itself, in order to fulfil Galbraith’s true intention, an unthinking machine that would work without question. Eventually these later, less advanced, robots became ubiquitous,
