Linden and Runa take Adam back to their home – an en- campment for the small group of human survivors.There they introduce Adam to their leaders, who are all equally suspicious of the robot. Eventually it is decided that he may remain with them if he demonstrates his loyalty by taking part in a trial – single combat with another robot. Adam defeats the other robot and proves his loyalty to the humans – and also demonstrates his highly advanced intelligence - and so is allowed to stay. He is introduced to Della, a woman in the camp who believes that Adam is the work of the man, Galbraith, who first created advanced intelligence – and confirms that he is the most sophisticated example of advanced intelligence in exist- ence.
Adam assists Della in the workshop of the camp, fixing broken machinery and old technology. He discovers
that there are certain parts that he will need that are not available in the workshop, and so along with Della, Linden and Runa he returns to the building in which he had been imprisoned – which the humans now believe to be the old home of Galbraith.They reach the building and recover various pieces of technology, but before they can leave, they are attacked by a group of robots lead by Red Sky, an advanced combat robot.They manage to escape, but Linden and Della are both wounded, and so they decide to travel to the Cailleach – a mysterious woman who lives on the outskirts of the city who can heal the sick and controls a safe zone in which humans and robots live in peace with one another.
