Tom followed Digby’s inky paw prints until he reached a canal. A fisherman eyed him suspiciously from a small boat. Digby hated the water – Tom knew he wouldn’t stick around here for long!
Just then, Tom heard a familiar meow.
The Grand Canal was built to link China’s two great
rivers, the Yangzi River and the Yellow River. It allowed
food, goods, messages and soldiers to be transported
more easily.
Fishermen used simple rafts to fish on the canal. They often tied black fishing birdscalled totherafts to catch the fish for them. They put rings around their necks so the birds couldn’t swallow the fish.
