Your body is covered in a thin layer of stretchy skin. It keeps everything inside you safe and keeps out germs that might make you ill.

When it’s cold, your skin helps to keep you warm. When it’s hot, your skin starts to sweat to help keep you cool.
When you cut your skin, it can heal itself. First, your blood comes out and makes a hard layer called a scab. Then, new skin grows underneath. This skin might be a different colour and is called a scar.

Sometimes your fingertips go wrinkly if you’ve been in water for a long time! Your skin makes a special oil to keep water out, but when the oil gets washed away, the skin starts to soak up water and becomes wrinkly.
