Wetlands are drained for two reasons; firstly to provide dry land for developers to build on, and secondly to provide farmers with water to use on their crops, or land for them to graze their animals on. Draining destroys the wetland habitat. For the wetlands that are left, the main threats are pollution and the introduction of foreign species like killer shrimp, which kill off native animals.
