The great crested newt is one of three newts found in the British Isles, along with the smooth newt and the palmate newt. It is the biggest and least common of the three.
How you can help
Be responsible and put rubbish in the bin. If you drop it on the ground, it might be washed into a river and could harm freshwater wildlife.
Ask your grown-up not to use chemical pesticides and fertilisers in the garden – they can run into rivers and could kill the fish.
Use biodegradable cleaning products, which will not pollute waterways such as rivers and streams.
Look for great crested newts with your friends. Any ponds that they are living in are protected by law, which means you are not allowed to disturb them or damange their habitat.
