International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th every year, and is a vocal point in the movement for women’s rights.
How did International Women’s Day start?
It’s roots can be traced back to when The Socialist Party of America organised a Women’s Day in New York on
February 28th, 1909.
At the following year’s International Socialist Women’s Conference, German revolutionary Clara Zetkin proposed that March 8th be honored as a day annually in memory of working women.
It is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Introduction
This International Women’s Day Magazine takes a look back at the iconic women in
history who have changed the world leading into 2020 and highlights inspirational and credible women who have made significant changes to the way women are viewed.
It is important to highlight the changes over time and how women are now becoming more equal with us all working together to make become one unit.

Sophie said; ‘I have an incredible job, I get to learn about Yorkshire’s leading businesses, products and services. I also get to help the business owners/ entrepreneurs running them. The ‘work-life’ balance is something I’ve found very difficult over the years. Women continue to struggle with what is expected of them - or what they ‘think’ is expected of them. Women strive to be it all, while stressing about how to do it all. I’ve found speaking openly and admitting when you need help is so important. I used to have a real fear of failure, which is a common theme amongst the female business owners I meet. We’re all facing similar challenges growing our businesses, the more we can help each
other the better.’
