Thrive Law
Jodie Hill shares her personal story and shows how we can achieve anything.
In 2017 I experienced a mental breakdown having battled with anxiety and PTSD most of my life. This led to extensive time off and leaving my job, in April 2017. The experience gave me a valuable insight into concerns that needed to be addressed in the profession including a clear lack of support and understanding as well as being able to deal with the stigma around mental health issues in the workplace. It became clear this was a major issue for most workplaces of all sizes and across all sectors.
This led me to set up Thrive Law, at the age of 29, in March 2018.
I founded the practice based on the simple premise that everyone should be enabled to Thrive in the workplace. Thrive specialises in offering businesses and personal solutions regarding employment law, HR, mental health and well-being and I couldn’t be prouder of my growing team which is currently at 10!
At this point I really was committed to destigmatising mental health in the workplace and so the #OneMind campaign was born. This campaign calls for the government to make mental health risk assessments in the workplace mandatory so that we identify issues earlier and normalise the conversation
of mental health at work. One thing I am keen to
do is to practice what I preach. It sounds simple but so many people actions
don’t match their words which I
find incredibly frustrating. We operate smart working at
Thrive and are truly diverse and flexible. This
was recognised
by both the Law Society and SRA in 2019 as a firm leading in this area.
The pinnacle for me
was the team winning
The Yorkshire Post’s Excellence in Business “Social
Mobility” award 2019 and the Yorkshire Legal Awards “Diversity & Inclusion” award 2019. This was a ringing endorsement of our vision, mission
and culture alongside the hard work of my amazing team. I could never have envisaged this just two
years after my own breakdown!
The driving force for me setting up on my own and in the way we have done, was to
also educate and empower. Since our launch we have created and grown Thriving Minds which educates business leaders on how
to effectively manage mental health in the workplace and Thrive Women connects like- minded ambitious women to connect, inspire and empower emerging leaders.
2020 is going to be a big year with the launch of our tHRive Club – HR for none HR people in May, as well as the launch of
our own wellbeing packages on the horizon, it’s a really busy time at Thrive HQ.
This all shows, with the right environment and the right people around you, you really can achieve anything.
