In the Philippines, morenas experience discrimination for their darker complexion.
Regardless of gender and status, this is where most experience colorism
(Francisco, 2019). As per Jomar Villanueva (2016), colorism refers to the
discrimination of individuals with darker skin tones and preference given to those
with lighter or 'whiter' skin, known as mestizos. The shade of a person's skin is
closely tied with beauty and ranking in the Philippines. The preference for fair skin
has made colorism a predominant issue, especially since the majority of Filipinos
                                                                            are born with darker skin.

.Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese contemporary artist, believes in becoming one with
the universe–or "self-obliteration" (Ignoramus, n.d). Kusama’s idea is similar to
the Buddhist striving for ego death, the ability to let go of ego. Through dissolves,
Self-Obliteration depicts the merging of flesh and identities into one whole with
no discernible individual units (Patel, 2016).
